Solution Technologies, Boca Raton, Florida, United States
Mensys B.V. , Haarlem, The Netherlands;
Paul Smedley, Greenwith, South Australia
Solution Technology, Mensys B.V. and Paul Smedley have come to an agreement to work together to provide a solution for legacy OS/2/eComStation applications that use a TWAIN interface to control a flatbed scanner.
TWAIN provides a standard interface that applications can use to control a scanner. All scanners currently supported on the OS/2/eComStation platform that have a driver with a TWAIN interface are legacy scanners with a SCSI interface. The result is that applications that ship with a TWAIN interface are not very useful anymore because modern scanners are not supported.
Solution Technologies has provided the source code of its OS/2 TWAIN DDK so an interface can be built between SANE and TWAIN.
The result will be that applications that access a flatbed scanner via a TWAIN interface will be able to utilize USB scanners with the aid of the open source scanner driver SANE
Kent Swan from Solution Technology: "This agreement enables Solution Technology to keep supporting its corporate OS/2/eComStation customers with up to date scanner support. The OS/2 kernel provides very good multi tasking and stability, the reason why some our customers prefer to run our scanner solutions on OS/2/eComStation. In conjunction with this agreement and the development Serenity Systems is doing for the eComStation we can provide our customers with a solution to keep their critical business processes going."
Paul Smedley from Australia and other developers have over the years been maintaining a port of the open source scanner driver SANE on the OS/2/eComStation platform.
When a beta release is ready for release of the TWAIN<->SANE interface it will be included with all SANE builds for OS/2. Custom applications and well known eComStation/OS/2 applications like PMVIEW, Embelish, Star Office for OS/2 etc will be able to use SANE supported USB scanners.
Future versions of eComStation will ship with this package and also the TAME software (a program to use in conjunction with SANE).
For corporate customers requiring support for their applications, please contact Solution Technology.

Serenity Systems International and netlabs.org today released the first beta version of Lucide, a document viewer for eComStation designed as an replacement for Acrobat Reader.
One goal of Lucide is to have a fast document viewer which is well integrated in the eComStation WPS and supports features like drag and drop and printing and which makes as easy as possible to work with PDF and other files on eComStation.
Lucide provides a SOM based plugin API, this makes it possible to support much more than just PDF documents, the current release also supports DjVu documents and JPEG files. More formats can easily be added by 3rd party programmers.
While the core of Lucide is currently not released as open source software, all plugins are available in sourcecode to encourage programmers to add support for more file types.
All registered eComStation customers can download Lucide Beta 1 from the the eComStation Betazone, after login at www.ecomstation.com
If you find any bugs please report them to the Netlabs tracking system
If you want to provide some more plugins for Lucide you will find the sample source code on this page as well. The package also contains all GPLed parts of the source code.
Support is available on the Lucide mailinglist, you will find details about that on the page mentioned above.

As part of the "Support Agreement for OpenOffice.org" Serenity Systems International is committed to deliver a natively running version of OpenOffice.org 2.0 on OS/2 and eComStation.
After a long period of developing, debugging, enhancing etc. the first results are available, the application now compiles and starts. Of course there is a long way to go, even to have a first user-testable beta release available, but as a teaser we released some screenshots here (click the OpenOffice.org 2.0 splashscreen to access the screenshot gallery)
We'll keep you informed on the progress and of course notify you as soon as a public beta release is available!

I've uploaded a test version of MySQL v5.0.19 to ports page.
Release Notes:
- no DLL is currently provided - so all client utilities are much larger executables than those found in Yuri's MySQL v4.1.7
- no libs\*, include\* are provided to reduce the package size - these are available on request
- built with libc06 CSD1 so libc061.dll is required
- this has currently had very limited testing - but it is running now on my server and being used successfully with my build of PHP 4.4.2
- All bug reports should be submitted via the bug tracker
Users of MySQL v4.1.7 can simply copy their data directory from the mysql41\data directory to mysql5\data and restart with the new mysqld.exe and it should work fine.
A *big* thanks to Yuri Dario who provided his patches for MySQL 4.1.7 which were the basis for this updated port. You can checkout (and support) Yuri's efforts via his website at http://www.os2power.com/yuri
Cheers,
Paul Smedley
