ArcaOS: Black Friday sales

Arca Noae is selling ArcaOS with discounts, shop

ArcaOS 5.0.1 now available

2017-07-27 11:01:55 -- Eugene Gorbunoff [os2.guru]

(July 9, 2017)

Arca Noae is pleased to announce the immediate availability of ArcaOS 5.0.1, the first maintenance release of ArcaOS 5.0 (Blue Lion).

ArcaOS 5.0.1 is the result of many hours of work to adjust things discovered after the release of ArcaOS 5.0, particularly impacting installation of the operating system. Of course, there are many other post-install fixes included, as well, and these will be made available for separate download as part of the ArcaOS 5.0 Support & Maintenance subscription shortly. In the meantime, a full download of the refreshed media image is required to obtain these fixes and updates.

If everything is working in your current installation, it may be prudent to wait for the subscription content to become available, as Arca Noae has not classified any of the 5.0.1 updates as critical.

If you have experienced difficulty installing ArcaOS 5.0, the fixes and updates included in 5.0.1 may address your issue(s).

For a complete list of updates in this release, see the ArcaOS wiki.

To download your fresh ISO, simply visit your customer portal page, select the Orders & Subscriptions link on the navigation panel to the left, then click on the order for your ArcaOS license. Once there, click the download link to request a fresh ISO, and wait for your notification email.

What is the area of OS/2 usage?

2017-05-07 23:24:57 -- Eugene Gorbunoff [os2.guru]

What is the area of OS/2 usage in 2017 and 2018? We should discuss this problem before talking about other topics.

OS/2: real-time or wait for completed?

2017-05-01 00:51:20 -- Eugene Gorbunoff [os2.guru]

What method of OS/2 development is better:

  • real-time show, when the system is developed in open mode: every week you get news and alpha-versions of modules / components.
  • or hidden development, when full completed version will be released at D-day. (Alpha versions are not available for public, ..)

Both approaches have advantages and disadvantages. Selected method of development is very critical. and there are two variants only: success or fail.

ArcaOS: Frequenly asked questions

2017-03-17 01:24:15 -- Eugene Gorbunoff [os2.guru]

You can post your questions here.

Official pages:

The users ask us:

  • Q1: What are the minimal system requirements of ArcaOS?
  • Q2: Is it necessary prepare NEW harddrive using DFSee or other utilities? Or ArcaOS is able to initialize, create the 1-st partition by itself?
  • Q3: Does ArcaOS support hard drives with AF label (Advanced Format)? does MiniLVM create partitions as required by the standard?
  • Q4: Does ArcaOS include OpenOffice?
  • Q5: Does ArcaOS support memory above 512Mb? (computers manufactured after 2010)
  • Q6: Does ArcaOS support Warpin format? (installer of eComStation applications)

Migration to new version of OS/2

2017-02-25 00:32:00 -- Eugene Gorbunoff [os2.guru]

If you have old OS/2, let's prepare it for upgrade (migration to new version).

Step 1-ый: send config.sys from old OS/2 / eCS to eCo Software. to email: support (at) os2 (dot) guru

file

+ email + name/nickname + model of pc (so you can remember what computer)

The assistant uility will be free for users.

What way of migration to select?

  • The system has "migration" mode when new files overwrite old files. a) some programs are cutted and don't work anymore b) in any case the users want install the system to fresh hard drive / ssd
  • Other way - copy directories with the programs. OS/2 programs don't have migration function so part of programs will not start after move.
  • We offer this way: You install new system to new hard drive. Migration assistant is collecting information from old disk about installed software and data for you.

Blue Lion moves into beta testing

2017-02-02 03:50:18 -- Eugene Gorbunoff [https://www.arcanoae.com/blue-lion-moves-beta-testing/]

Per Arca Noae's revised release schedule, and as announced at Warpstock 2016, Blue Lion (ArcaOS 5.0) moved into beta testing stage today. The first beta release has been made available to the test team, and we anticipate a rigorous round of installation, modifications, formatting, deletion, disk wiping, and all that other fun stuff which accompanies a healthy beta test.

We do not anticipate a public beta cycle nor are we planning a gamma release or an untold number of release candidates. Instead, we fully expect ArcaOS 5.0 to emerge from beta testing at the end of March and to become generally available at that time.

We wish to thank our loyal supporters, our beta testers, and our development team for their dedication to the Blue Lion project, and look forward to the next 60 days as we ready the next release of OS/2.

Pricing will be made available in the near future. Expect two tiers, much like our subscription service (Personal and Commercial), with the latter including prioritized support and a longer bundled maintenance period. Volume discounts will also be available.

Artwork for OS/2 installers

2016-08-20 00:26:03 -- Eugene Gorbunoff [os2.guru]

eCo Design (eCo Software) have created pictures for OS/2 installer. Here is the example:

We expect that Arca Noae or other companies will use this pictures. The creation required many efforts, we have processed many pictures and photos. In result, we have unique high quality set of pictures.

What means "OS/2 5-th generation"?

2016-07-09 21:40:53 -- Eugene Gorbunoff [os2.guru]

There were 4 generations of OS/2 in the past:

Operating system = kernel + API + system utilities + system apps + installer + User Interface

Seems that OS/2, Fifth generation means:

  • (as before) 32-bit kernel, modernized
  • ACPI sub-system
  • extended API (eCo Software runtime)
  • updated user interface (dialogs, PNG icons) + XWorkPlace
  • device drivers: SATA + CUPS for printing + modern video driver (Panorama)

eComStation 2.x - it's OS/2 of 5-th generation. ArcaOS (the release of 1-st version is planned for late third quarter or fourth quarter of 2016) - may achieve the 5-th generation too.
